ANNOUNCEMENTS

MANY THANKS for lay staff bonuses - Each year's end, we give thanks for our wonderful lay staff (Marilynn, Doug, Evelyn, Luis, Sharon and Bruce) with bonuses. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY —Join Martha+ and a group of inquiring minds as we undertake a more in-depth study of Islam in January.  We did a brief study of world religions in the fall and decided that we wanted to learn more about Islam.  We begin on Wednesday, January 4th from 10:30 -11:30 in the Lower Parish Hall.  The class will run for six weeks.  We pick another topic at the end for the next six weeks--most likely on the Orthodox Church with Matthew Stremba as guide.  Join us!

PARENTS/COUPLES GROUP – The group will meet on January 8th from 4-6 pm at the home of Leigh and Tim Weihs. Though not limited to parents and couples, the intention of the group is to meet and discuss being a parent, educating children in our church, being a healthy part of a couple, and learning and sharing with one another. Please bring an appetizer or dip to share. Kids are welcome. RSVP to Leigh at LThurmond@hotmail.com.

MINDFULNESS CLASS —Gina Sager, former surgeon and now mindfulness practitioner, will teach her 8 week mindfulness meditation course for 8 weeks from 4pm-6pm beginning on Sunday afternoon, January 8th. The classes will run through Sunday, February 26th with the request that the first two Sunday afternoons of March be reserved for snow make-up days. Gina teaches this class at Hopewell Cancer Retreat House as well a Breathe Books and other locations in Baltimore. We are able to offer this course for the cost of $200 per person. In addition to the 8 two hour classes, you receive a meditation notebook and 4 CDs or cassette tapes with yoga and meditation practices. As always, scholarship assistance for the course is available by seeing Martha+. The class is limited to 15 people. If you are interested, please contact Martha+. A deposit of $50 made out to Memorial Church is required to reserve your spot. Note that Parents of Younger Children (who are having their first meeting at the same time on Jan 8th) can register for the class and make up the first class at a different time.

BOOK CLUB - Wednesday, January 11, 2006 - The book to be discussed is The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. A heartbreaking story that captures the Lost Generation set on the Left bank of Paris and in Pamplona after World War I. Please let the office know if you plan to attend. We meet at church - usually in the upper parish house – from 7.30 to 9 PM. Some of us gather at B’s around 6PM for fellowship and a light supper. All are welcome – even if you haven’t read the book. Upcoming dates and selections for 2006: -February 22nd— Plainsong by Kent Haruf; April 5th - Hearts in Atlantis

INQUIRER’S CLASS - Confirmation is intended to be an adult affirmation of faith. It is not just about membership in the Episcopal Church. It is about conversion of heart, and about mission and ministry; as much about forming and transforming people's lives, as it is about information. Someone said that at baptism, we become bearers of the Light, and at confirmation, we must become sharers of that Light. Stewart+ will lead this year's Inquirer's Class in preparation for confirmation or reception by the Bishop during Eastertide. Usually we meet for an hour and a half for 8 weeks. If you are interested, please join Stewart+ on Sunday, January 29th at noon in the Upper Parish Hall for a short meeting to decide on a convenient meeting time. If you cannot be at the meeting, just let him know of your desire to join the group.

Samaritan Community: FOOD PANTRY : As the cold weather is here, we do need all kinds of cough & cold medicine; coffee, tea, & cocoa; and any first aid supplies.

EUTAW-MARSHBURN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL students need both LISTENERS and READERS. The 2nd graders need folks who will both read to them and listen to them read. The time is mostly in the morning first thing but can be adjusted in cooperation with the teacher. This would be for 1/2 hour or so at a time . The length and frequency can be arranged to suit the volunteer. Please let Pam Fleming know if you can be a 2nd grade helper. (410) 366-6827 or guypamsh@bcpl.net
