Christian Education is a mission, a mission committed to telling the world about God. At Memorial we have fun with Christian Education. From the nursery to Liturgy and Living to the Book Club, we try to have fun while learning the stories of God and developing our own beliefs and spiritual disciplines.
This adult education forum meets every Sunday morning for coffee and conversation on topics related to our lives as members of a community of faith and as members of Memorial. The rector convenes these discussions. We often welcome guest speakers to lead discussions on current event topics. Join us for a cup of coffee and dialogue at 9:30 am every Sunday in the Lower Parish Hall.
The rector leads this group every Wednesday at 10:30am in the Lower Parish Hall. We usually study a book of the Bible or a title from another spiritual author. Please join us for this lively group!
During Lent we join with Brown Memorial and Corpus Christi for educational opportunities. We traditionally join together for an ecumenical Ash Wednesday Service as well as special services during Holy Week.
The Memorial Book Club meets every month or six weeks in the evening to discuss a wide variety of selections -- old and new, classics and "want to bes.” We mostly enjoy the camaraderie and challenging opinions of friends, who often make us look at authors and their works in an entirely different light than we had previously. Occasionally we meet for supper first.
You don't have to commit to reading every selection to join in the fun !!!!! Contact John Payne or the church office for more information.Parents may prefer that their infants and young children meet other little people in the nursery with adult supervision, cribs, and plenty of toys during the 9:30 a.m. Education Hour and the 10:30 a.m. service. Our nursery is open Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 p.m., and is located in the undercroft of the church. Parents using the nursery are asked to volunteer regularly to supplement the paid staff. Children must be registered and signed-in weekly in order to utilize nursery services.
The goal of Godly Play is to teach children the art of using religious language – parable, sacred story, silence, and liturgical action – to help interpret what happens in their daily lives. Godly Play was developed and classroom tested for more than twenty years by Episcopal priest, author, and teacher Jerome Berryman. The Godly Play method is currently being used in churches of many denominations throughout the United States and Canada.
In Godly Play, we tell Bible stories to children to encourage them to enter into the stories and relate them to their personal experience. Godly Play is concerned with the spiritual development of each child as an individual and with modeling the appropriate moral behaviors expected of people living within a Christian community. In Godly Play, each Sunday school class follows the pattern of the Holy Eucharist, so children will also learn the etiquette of being in church.
All of our children enjoy this method of learning, and we have a great time in fellowship together. We give hearty thanks to the parents who bring our feast each week! This is truly a great place for your children to experience the Memorial Community as well as learn about the great stories of the Bible and the important themes of our faith.
Rite 13 is a unique group made of middle school students 11-13. The group discusses social and moral issues, such as the recent Terri Schiavo/feeding tube case as well as spiritual issues concerning God and his holy son. The group starts by telling good-and-bad's and continues to discuss the topic, or, as of recently, work on their fundraiser for Heifer International. The group is directed by the Rev. T. Stewart Lucas and Valarie Brown and consists of Matthew Bolton, Alex Johnson-Lorentz, Sally Ratrie, Maggie Casey, Anna Kelleher, and Lucy Walker.
