Leadership Group for Children’s Formation
This summer several parents and friends of the Memorial’s Sunday School met at Julie Modlin and John Webb’s home to vision and dream about our programs for children at Memorial. Out of our two sessions came the following recommendations:
We love the Godly Play method of teaching the story of God and God’s people
We would like a way to teach the traditions of the church to our children, beginning with an age-appropriate venue and method.. Learning hymns and liturgy are important.
We want to incorporate new families as we can. Fellowship with other families is important.
With these recommendations in mind, the Leadership Group suggested the following ideas which have been incorporated in our fall Sunday program:
First Sunday @ 5 beginning October 4 and continuing Nov 1 and December 6: An informal Eucharist geared to all ages at 5 pm followed by a community potluck. There will be no Sunday School on First@5 Sundays.
Sundays Mornings beginning September 20 (with the exception of First Sundays).
9:30: Craft time begins in the Rectory for early arrivals
10:00 Godly Play Story is told. Sunday School families are invited to tell the story.
10:30 Sunday School attends church through the Sequence Hymn
10:50 (approximately): the Verger leads the Sunday School back to the Rectory for a worship service geared to children during the sermon, creed and prayers of the people. The children return by the Offertory to join their families for Eucharist. During this time, there will be opportunity to learn hymns as well as wonder about the Gospel story.
